Q & A with Author Bob Graham

We recently read the book HOW TO HEAL A BROKEN WING by Bob Graham. He's both the author and the illustrator. The kids adored it because it's about a boy who helps an injured bird. They had so many questions and comments about the book that they decided  to write a letter to the author.  Mr. Graham answered their questions and also sent copies of the pages of sketches he did while the book was just an idea. Here is the correspondence and photos of the illustrations.

We are studying maps. Our little cartographers are learning the different parts of maps and their importance. They are enjoying it tremendously! Enjoy…

“What is a map?” Mrs. Laurent

“Something that you use to find different places.” Maggie

“Where you can find places, like, if you wanna go to a different state.” Hayden

“Something like if you, um, um, you wanna go on a trip and you don’t know where it is.” Elin

“Where you can learn about the world.” Scott

“Where you can find different places of the whole world.” Sam

“It can help you because, um, if you wanted to know what that country was you could look at the map.” Tait

“It shows the different states.” Addie Gray

“It helps you find the whole world without even, without even driving. Well, you just have to fly a plane and then you’re there.” Miles

“Where you wanna go somewhere, and you have the, then you use the map.” Addyson

“Like, where you wanna see different kind of places that you never been to.” Tehya

Like, if, if you don’t know, um, what all the places are called you can just look at your map and then it’ll tell you.” Elin

“Um, if you look at a map then you know where you’re going.” Olivia

“It can help you where you’re going.” Cole

“WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE DIDN’T HAVE MAPS?” Laurent
“You wouldn’t know where you are going.” Addie Gray

“Um, then you could get lost because if you were going to the airport, then you could get lost because you don’t know where it is.” Olivia

“You can’t find the place.” Sam

“Um, you couldn’t see the world ‘cause you can’t go to outer space.” Tait

“You can’t find where to go, where you want to. You can find the airport.” Hayden

“You was going to the store, and you will, and then you will get lost.” Addyson

HOW DOES THE MAP KEY HELP US?” Laurent

“It’s for, that you can see, you can see what do you wanna go, like if you want to recycle. ”(The map we used had a recycling company on it) Tehya

“To tell you what it is. So if you’re not sure what something is it can tell you” Tait

“It shows you what is over there, and if you didn’t have one you wouldn’t know it’s over there.” Addie Gray

“If you didn’t have a map key then,
It helps you by, um, going places. Like telling you where to go and how to do it.” Maggie

“If you didn’t have a map key then you would not, um, know where places are and then you couldn’t get to there.” Olivia

“WHAT IS A COMPASS ROSE?” Laurent

“It helps you go west, and it helps you go north, and it helps you go east and it helps you go south.” Hayden

“It helps you go different places. If you look at south, north, east, and west then, and you know where those places are then you can go to the place that you wanna go.” Maggie

“Um, if you look at north, south, east, and west, it helps you go places.” Tait

“You see a sign on every road and it helps you, and that road, then if you make a turn on the right, then you go east.” Miles

“Um, you can go somewhere else, instead of just staying home (the kids had to figure out alternate routes) all the time.” Addie Gray

“You can go different places.” Sam

“Um, you can, um, go to the store and buy toys by the compass rose.” Tehya
